Digital delivery excellence in the environment of the FIFA World Cup 2018 platforms

As part of the FIFA World Cup 2018, CND supported the Digital Product Team in an international project environment with direct relevance for millions of users worldwide. The focus was on the provision and stable operation of the official FIFA World Cup website, the FIFA app and other digital services around the tournament.

The project fell into a phase of fundamental technological transformation. An API-based architecture was introduced to decouple the front end and back end more strongly and make the platform scalable in the long term. This change significantly increased the technical and organisational complexity.

In this phase, CND brought in targeted delivery and project management expertise to ensure structure, coordination and implementation certainty. The goal was to be able to operate and develop the platform stably despite ongoing changes.

During the tournament, the focus shifted to operational running. This included monitoring, incident detection and escalation, the coordination of deployments as well as ensuring performance, security, content accuracy and capacity planning. In parallel, daily coordination was carried out with international partners and delivery teams to continuously manage risks and ongoing activities.

An additional success factor was the integration of GDPR measures shortly before the start of the tournament. These were embedded into the existing processes without affecting ongoing operation.

The platforms could be operated stably. Risks were identified and managed early, deployments implemented in a controlled manner and availability ensured even under high load.

and show how complex digital platforms can be operated stably under high load and global visibility.

CND combines technical understanding with structured delivery management. Around the FIFA World Cup 2018, this meant ensuring, in an international and time-critical environment, the transparency and stability that such platforms require.
